My thoughts on Big Rapids and Mecosta County area.I have lived in the Big Rapids area for over twenty years now and have to say it is one of my favorite places in Michigan. With the downtown growing by the minute and the larger box stores on Perry St, you are never more than a few minutes away from any number of choices for eating or shopping. If you have not stopped by the Blue Cow Cafe and tried the Firehouse Rib Eye you are definitely in for a treat. Chuck and Connie have gone above and beyond to create a true eating experience. Next wander across the street to the Pioneer Emporium and you will fall in love with all of the unique gifts and ornaments. They make their own fudge and my wife is addicted to their Chocolate shakes. Art Works is a few doors down if you want to experience big city culture in a small town atmosphere. Being the home to Ferris State University we have a diverse population that recycles itself every year. Five minutes in any direction and you are back to the country where hunting and fishing opportunities abound. Roben-Hood airport is on the North end for those needing to fly in or out. Northend Riverside Park is also at the North end of town takes advantage of the BR riverwalk to link Hemlock Park and the Rails to Trails. With Fishing spots and a number of volleyball courts, horseshoe pits and pavilions for picnicking the park is a must visit spot. In Hemlock Park we have our Playscape area that all kids love to enjoy. Big Rapids is conveniently located about an hour and a half from Traverse City and about an hour from either Mount Pleasant or Grand Rapids for easy commutes to those wanting to visit larger cities. The Mecosta County Medical Center is here in town for any emergencies that may arise. We have a wonderful school system as every school in the Big Rapids district has met rigorous national standards for quality established by the North Central Association. Big Rapids continues to be one of a select group of school districts state-wide accredited in all schools K-12. We not only have City Police but also have a County Sheriff department here in town to make life safe for all. Recreation opportunities are everywhere with the mighty Muskegon flowing through the area. Almost every day in the summer you can see hundreds of people tubing the river. Biking the rails to trails or a round of golf at Falcon Head or Katke Golf Courses can always be an adventure. Come winter new ideas come to mind with ice fishing and snowmobiling or cross country skiing. Like I mentioned before I have grown to love the area and all of it's people and I am always available to point you in the right direction should you need me. Come visit Big Rapids and I think you will want to stay.
